How to Lay Flagstone – Start with a solid base and half your battle is won
There are numerous sorts of stones used for patios. The test now is how to lay flagstone. This question is answered once you have chosen the type of stone to floor your patio. New Mexico Flagstone, Arizona flagstone, Pennsylvania Blue Flagstone, etc. are some
of the common varieties.
While learning how to lay flagstone, it is important to learn about the patio bases. The best bases for these flat stones are stone dust or sand. Sand that does not move once compacted is sometimes refered to as “dead” sand as opposed to live sand which is often used where drainage is a concern. Dead Sand should be used as the base for a flagstone patio. The feature of a good base is that it must be solid and compact. A loose base will significantly change the stability of the flagstones being set. No one would want a patio slowly sinking into the ground because of an unstable base.
The longest-lasting patios are generally laid using sand and/or gravel. Some may select the use of a cement or mortar foundation. While beautiful initially, the cement and mortar will crumble and give away more easily than sand and gravel foundations. When repair works are carried out for the cement or mortared foundations, the whole patio will have be broken and new flagstones will have to be bought.
The optimal resources for this job are decomposed crushed granite and course sand. Materials like crushed stones such as crushed cement, crushed limestone, or crushed flagstone will work in a good way. However, the use of coarse sand in place of round or beach sand is recommended as coarse grains are more stable. Usage of ground granite works best. It behaves more alike cement and won’t come out of the cracks. The added advantage is that, it provides optimal protection against weeds. Ground granite prevents shifting superior to any other available material. Crushed granite is often found for free from processing plants, compost
yards, or quarries. This is often sold by the name of stone dust.
As you can see, it will take you less than a day to learn how to lay flagstone. Armed with the proper knowledge, tackle your flagstone patio installation project yourself and save lots of money in the process.
